Intelligent Agro Science and Technology Society of Agro-Biology Department Promoting Food Safety and Hygiene in Kindergarten for the First Time

In the morning of April 23rd, members of “Intelligent Agro Science and Technology Society – Branch of Food Safety” of Agro-Biology Department in SJTU, led by two teachers, Liu Monan and Fu Weiyan from the Center, headed for the kindergarten on Shuiqing Road, Xinzhuang and gave the children in Class 2 the first phase food safety science education.

Zou Yue, a sophomore member of the Society, gave the kids a PPT presentation, made very lively and detailed explanation of such questions as “why should we wash hands”, “when should we wash hands”, “how to wash hands”, “fried chips and roasted chicken: good or bad”, “how to keep tableware clean”, etc. And kids were active in answering: “because there are germs on the hands”, “eating without washing hands makes me sick”, “I don’t like fried chips”, they try their best to participate. The teachers and students also led the kids through standardized steps of hand-washing, including the nail, the palm, the back of the hand, the thumb, etc., and the kids imitated really carefully by watching closely of teachers’ hands. The members of the team also explained to the kids that diarrhea or stomachache is mostly caused by incorrect handling of glasses, which allows germs to be transferred onto the mouth of their cups or their table wares and make them sick. Members of the Society made a demo to show kids “how to hold your cup correctly”, so that they can leave an impressive image. Lastly they taught kids a short, catchy poem about “hygiene safety”, which was welcomed by the kids.

Through this food safety promotion, kids in the kindergarten gained some basic knowledge of food safety, and learnt to protect themselves better through safer, healthier diet habits. The team was generally welcomed by parents of the kids and the kindergarten, and they expressed their wishes that more such activities should be given to help kids grow up healthily.
