On the afternoon of May 22, Bor S. Luh Food Safety Research Center together with Pujiang Green Valley Low Carbon Agricultural Popular Science Education Base held an extracurricular popular science activity “Urban Agriculture and Food Safety” for students in Grade 6 of Shanghai World Foreign Language Middle School. Teacher Fu Weiyan from the Center, Teacher Peng Yongzheng from Pujiang Green Valley and the student volunteer Zhao Yimeng from SJTU jointly participated in the activity.

At the beginning of the activity, Teacher Fu gave a lecture about food safety for students in vivid language. She imparted food safety knowledge to students in three aspects including overview of food safety, food safety and nutrition, and internet-based rumor about food safety. On the site, students actively interacted with the teacher, and raised questions about food safety they encountered in real life, and Teacher Fu answered all of them with patience.
After the lecture came to an end, the students watched a brief introduction to the base park at the lobby on the first floor. After that, Teacher Peng led the students to pay a visit to the base park. And the first stop was the hydroponics room, where Teacher Peng gave an introduction to cucumber and tomato plants planted in greenhouse. And the following stop was the strawberry plantation, in which Teacher Peng gave an introduction to knowledge about the growth and planting of strawberry, and invited the students to pick it and have a taste. After leaving the strawberry plantation, they went to the succulent room. After the explanation of the skills about planting sedium aizoon L. by Teacher Peng, a planting competition was organized, which made the students feel the happiness to do it themselves and the significance of teamwork. Finally, Teacher Peng led the students to plant succulent plants with their own hands, and presented such succulent plants they planted to themselves as gifts.
During the activity, students from Shanghai World Foreign Language Middle School were full of enthusiasm and curiosity about agricultural planting. The popular science practical activity not only broadened the students’ horizon, but also made them in intimate contact with nature, cultivate manipulative ability, and spend a wonderful and meaningful day.
