Federal authorities on Wednesday announced two food recalls related to possible contamination with the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes.

It wasn’t clear Wednesday whether southwest Ohio institutions received, served or sold the recalled products. Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.

Buddy’s Kitchen, a Burnsville, Minnesota, food producer, is recalling about 62,500 pounds of meat and poultry products, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service. The breakfast products all contained redskin potatoes, a sample of which tested positive for the bacteria. No illnesses have been reported, but the USDA and the company are concerned that some of the recalled items may be in consumers’ freezers.

The meat and poultry breakfast products were produced on various dates from July 16 through Sept. 25 and shipped to distributors, retailers, and airlines nationwide, the USDA said. The company’s customers include convenience stores, vending-machine operators, and senior-living food service, according to buddyskitchen.com. Case labels or packaging may bear the mark of “EST. 4226” or “P-4226” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

No list of retailers that received the product was available from the USDA on Wednesday for the breakfast items, or for the food items involved in a second recall, this one announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, involving 2-ounce and 4-ounce packages of Jinga “Pan Fried Anchovies.” This recall also was due to contamination with Listeria.

The recalled Jinga anchovies were distributed nationwide in retail stores and through mail orders. The product comes in clear plastic packages marked with an expiration date of “9/28/2014” stamped on the top. One suspected illness has been reported in connection with that recall.
