On May 20th 2010, Dr. Chih-Sheng Lin, the professor at the Department of Biological Science and Technology, Taiwan Chiao Tung University, visited SJTU-Bor S. Luh Food Safety Research Center. Professor Lin obtained his Ph.D. in Animal Science from Taiwan Chung Hsing University in 1998. He then accepted the position as the professor at Taiwan Chiao-Tung University in 2001. Professor Lin engaged in and made great achievements in the research of molecular mechanism of fibrotic remodeling, biosensing systems and microalgal technology. Almost ten invents have bee patented in recent years.
Professor Chih-Sheng Lin made a speech titled as ‘Application of using gold nanoparticles on biosensing platform for biomolecule diagnosis’. Three biosensing platforms were developed in Professor Lin’s lab, including quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), screen printed carbon electrodes (SPCE), and optical sensing method by gold nanoparticals interaction. These platforms could be applied to detect the biomolecules, such as pathogens (E. coli O157:H7 and Dengue virus), chemicals (phenolic compounds and presides) and proteinase activity (matrix metalloproteinases, MMPs). After further research under Professor Lin’s direction, they discovered that gold nanoparticles could be applied to the biosensing platforms to enhance the detection sensitivity and detection limit.
More than 30 teachers and students attended the seminar from the School of Agriculture and Biology, the School of Life Science and Technology, and Instrumental Analysis Center of SJTU, etc.. They showed high interests on the speech and had a heated discussion with Professor Lin. As the chair of Department of Biological Science and Technology, Taiwan Chiao Tung University, Professor Lin paid much attention to the education of undergraduate and graduate students. He sang high praise for the SJTU students and wished to have more exchange and collaboration with SJTU faculties and students.
