Oct. 4, 2018 -- An Arizona company has recalled more than 6.5 million pounds of beef products, including ground beef, because they may be contaminated with Salmonella Newport, the U.S. Department of Agriculture says.
The recall by JBS Tolleson Inc. involves hundreds of products sold under the brand names Cedar River Farms Natural Beef, Comnor Perfect Choice, Gourmet Burger, Grass Run Farms Natural Beef, JBS Generic, and Showcase, including Showcase products sold at Walmart. No other retailers are mentioned in the USDA news release or product recall list, but they were sold at stores and shipped to institutions nationwide. Southeastern Grocers, however, announced it was issuing its own voluntary recall for JBS Tolleson products sold in its Winn Dixie stores in Alabama, Florida and Georgia, and in its Harveys Supermarkets in Georgia, Florida and South Carolina.

The agency has received reports of 57 illnesses from 16 states related to the products from Aug. 5 to Sept. 6. Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fever from 12 to 72 hours after eating the product. While most people recover without treatment, older adults, infants, and people with weaker immunity may have more severe symptoms.
Anyone who has purchased these products and may still have them in the freezer should throw them away or return them to the store where they were bought. Consumers with questions can contact the JBS USA Consumer Hotline at 800-727-2333.
